What is a CSCS card?
A CSCS card proves that the holder has passed the appropriate health, safety and environment test and holds a relevant qualification for their occupation in construction. The cards are colour-coded by level: Labourer (green), Trained Operative (blue), Skilled Worker (blue), Supervisor (gold), Manager (black), and several others. Different cards have different qualification requirements and renewal cycles.
When do CSCS cards expire?
Most CSCS cards are valid for 5 years. The exact expiry date is printed on the card. After expiry, the card is invalid and the worker cannot access most UK construction sites using it. Some card types (such as the Academically Qualified Person card) have different validity periods — check the card's expiry date, not an assumed cycle.
What happens when a CSCS card expires?
A worker with an expired CSCS card cannot pass the card check at most construction site gates. This is typically discovered at the gate — the worst possible moment. If the worker is turned away, your project timeline slips and you need to arrange cover at short notice. The worker must then renew their card (re-take the CSCS test, apply for a new card) before returning to site — a process that takes days to weeks depending on test availability.
How to renew a CSCS card
To renew a CSCS card, the worker must: (1) pass the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment test (valid for 2 years from the test date); (2) hold a current and relevant NVQ, SVQ, or equivalent qualification for the new card; and (3) apply online at cscs.uk.com with the test pass and qualification details. The card is typically issued within 5-7 working days of a successful application.
Why tracking CSCS card expiries matters for employers
As an employer or principal contractor, you are responsible for ensuring your workers can access site. A missed CSCS renewal doesn't just affect one worker — it can affect your project programme, your contract with the client, and your relationship with the site manager. Tracking expiry dates proactively and renewing ahead of expiry protects your project delivery.
